Writing and recording [ edit] U2 had been friends with Nelson Mandela for several years, having played concerts in South Africa. The first version was about Nelson Mandela, and the second was "more surreal and personal. 8] Whereas the second version was included on No Line on the Horizon, 8] they decided to include the first version about Mandela on the vinyl as a B-side for "Ordinary Love" entitling it "Breathe (Mandela version. 4] Weinstein has said that he believes U2 have done a "brilliant job honouring the man. 4] Rolling Stone said. Ordinary Love' is about the seeds of dreams, and U2 play it perfectly: down-to-earth, while looking up. 9] As of March 2014, the single has sold 115, 000 copies in the United States. Ordinary love cast. Movies, ‘Ordinary Love Review: In Sickness and in Health Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson play a married couple facing a cancer diagnosis. Credit. Bleecker Street Feb. 12, 2020 Updated 4:00 p. m. ET Ordinary Love Directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa, Glenn Leyburn Drama, Romance R 1h 32m Tom and Joan are a long-married couple whose daily routines — walking for exercise, shopping for groceries, trading affectionate pretend insults — signal deep affection and easy intimacy. The movie about a trying year in their lives is called “Ordinary Love, ” and the opening scenes paint a modest, careful picture of unexceptional middle-class existence. The catch — and also the point — is that these unassuming people are played by two extraordinary actors: Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville. The film, directed by Lisa Barros DSa and Glenn Leyburn from a screenplay by Owen McCafferty, is nearly a two-hander, and the hands are played with discipline, grace and wit. Neeson, taking a break from his usual wintertime angry-dad action-movie duties, is wry and crinkly, his loose limbs and craggy features suggesting great power in repose. Manville is a sharp, quicksilver presence, her face hovering between impatience and astonishment. The two of them communicate absolute trust in each other, and inspire the same in the audience. You are prepared to believe everything they say and do. But you may also wish there were more. The narrative of “Ordinary Love, ” which stretches between two Christmases, deals with what happens after Joan finds a lump in her left breast. There are tests, more tests, surgery and chemotherapy — the grim, anxious, absurd routines of modern cancer treatment. “There wont be a minute that I wont be there with you, ” Tom promises, and though he is true to his word, Joans illness subjects their relationship to complicated stresses and shocks. They are going through it together, but in a cruelly asymmetrical fashion. The caregiver and the patient are allies, but neither one shares the others particular suffering, which threatens to turn them into adversaries. DSa and Leyburn (“Cherrybomb, ” “Good Vibrations”) convey this with a sensitivity that is both admirable and frustrating, casting a tasteful, restrained hush over potentially unruly emotions. The music (by David Holmes and Brian Irvine) modulates from nervous to soothing to sad, and the editing (by Nick Emerson) folds one scene tactfully into the next. It has often been said that war movies inevitably glorify combat, and its also true that movies about grave illness tend to sentimentalize its ravages. That is the case here: An experience often defined by dread, indignity and tedium is softened and made beautiful. There are, nonetheless, a handful of scenes that have the rough, tender pulse of real life. The major problem is that, beyond the cancer and their devotion to each other, Tom and Joan seem barely to have lives at all. We know that they had a daughter, named Debbie, who died, though we dont know how or how long ago that tragedy occurred. Tom and Joan have, as far as we can tell, no other family, no jobs and no friends, though they do strike up an acquaintance with a couple they meet at the hospital. Tom feeds the fish in his aquarium, and he and Joan take daily power walks and squabble about nutrition, but any cultural interests or political opinions they might have remain unspoken. Or else left blank by the filmmakers, who depend on Neeson and Manville to fill in the scripts empty spaces with the force of their personalities. It almost works, but as persuasive as the performers can be, Tom and Joan seem less real the more time you spend with them. Ordinary Love Rated R. Sexuality. Profanity. Mortality. Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes.

Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson are note-perfect as an everyday couple coping with cancer in this singular drama with universal appeal 5 / 5 stars 5 out of 5 stars. ‘Simply flawless: Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson in Ordinary Love. Photograph: Universal T heres nothing ordinary about this deeply moving, frequently funny and piercingly insightful drama from Belfast playwright Owen McCafferty, making his screenwriting feature debut. On the surface its a tale of a middle-aged couple facing up to a diagnosis of breast cancer, and a year of medical intervention. Yet beyond this immediate diagnosis is something far more rich and compelling – a story of everyday love between two people living in the shadow of grief, facing an uncertain future, both together and apart. Directed with wit, subtlety and great emotional honesty by Lisa Barros DSa and Glenn Leyburn (the co-directors of 2012s brilliantly life-affirming Good Vibrations) its a singular story with universal appeal – striking a very personal chord with some viewers while finding common ground with the widest possible audience. Ive seen it three times so far, and found it more joyous, heart-breaking and ultimately uplifting with each subsequent viewing. Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson are note-perfect as Joan and Tom, a couple living in Northern Ireland for whom gentle bickering has become a sign of affection – a way of saying “I love you” without having to use those often awkward words. At Joans apparent insistence, the pair have taken up walking, striding along a waterside prom to a designated tree and back – an attempt to stave off the inevitable aches and pains of ageing. “How does the Fitbit know youre walking? ” Tom asks his ever-so-slightly exasperated wife, before insisting that the exercise “ allows me to have a beer” despite her health-conscious protestations to the contrary. When Joan feels a lump in her breast, her husband tries to reassure her that its “nothing”, even after initial investigations raise cause for concern. “Well do whatever has to be done, the two of us, ” says Tom, asserting that “there isnt a moment I wont be with you”. Yet that togetherness will be sorely tested by a process that necessarily separates patients from their loved ones, frequently leaving Tom stewing in impersonal waiting rooms while Joan undergoes examination and surgery. “Im glad our Debbie isnt here to go through this, ” says Joan, referring to the lost daughter whose presence still feels real, highlighting divisions between the couples different ways of dealing (or not dealing) with the current crisis. Anyone with experience of a similar situation will recognise the pinpoint accuracy with which Ordinary Love depicts Joans journey through cancer care, right down to such tiny details as the weirdly jarring snapping sound of the mechanised syringe used to take a biopsy. Equally on the money is the depiction of the petty distractions that can accompany life-changing hospital visits – the moment of panic Joan feels when shes called for her test results just as Tom has disappeared off to the toilet; a tense exchange conducted sotto voce while queuing to pay for the car parking. Its that evocation of the intangible interface between the mundane and the monumental that lends Ordinary Love such universal appeal – the sense of down-to-earth characters quietly wrestling with the cosmic mysteries of life and death, love and grief, with a mixture of sorrow and laughter. Whether its a tragicomic graveside musing about the metaphysics of the afterlife, or an absurdist argument about three being closer to five than one on a sliding scale of probability (apparently drawn verbatim from an exchange between McCafferty and his wife Peggy) Ordinary Love brilliantly captures that strange sense of everything and nothing happening simultaneously – to everyone. Watch a trailer for Ordinary Love. Crucially, although the narrative is bookended with images of Tom and Joan together, the emotional separation they experience during Joans treatment is accompanied by an unexpected bonding with others who are going through the same thing – the “Normal People” of the scripts original title. One of Debbies old teachers, formerly dismissed as “arrogant”, becomes a confidante, a fellow patient with whom Joan can laugh about the indignities of chemo-induced hair loss. Meanwhile Tom (who is “always Tom”) makes a waiting-room connection that proves quietly groundbreaking, causing a subtle change that cuts to the heart of the films wider purpose. With cinematographer Piers McGrail and editor Nick Emerson, Leyburn and Barros DSa create a cinematic space that combines the intimate domestic stillness of Michael Hanekes Amour with an almost Kubrickian sense of alienating architecture during the accelerating hospital scenes. A beautiful ambient score by David Holmes and Brian Irvine proves as quietly powerful and moving as the film itself, like a randomly generated cellular lullaby. As for the performances, they are simply flawless, with particular plaudits to Manville, for whom awards are surely due. A wordless closeup of her face as Joan undergoes breast imaging will stay with me forever – in her eyes, we see fear, anxiety and a hint of loneliness, mixed with a strange cocktail of acceptance and defiance, and something that still manages to look like love.

December 11, 2019 Ignore the unassuming title: Ordinary Love is a love story that is extraordinary. You'll feel nothing but fondness for your surroundings after watching this scaldingly fine romance. December 10, 2019 Just so perfectly judged, and I'm a big fan of these filmmakers. The script is terrific, and a lovely, ambient score... December 9, 2019 It's hampered by our familiarity with the cancer story and by the frustratingly under-explained revelation that this is not the first time their marriage has been tested by terrible events. With the stars conjuring up an ideal rapport, however, its portrait of a long-married couple is beguiling. There's nothing particularly surprising in this film. In fact, it's so ordinary that it almost feels slight. But the depths of feeling linger. Sure, it's sometimes tough going, but the hardship and fear are laced with wit, warmth and a comforting sense of authenticity. It's essentially a two-hander, and places a heavy burden on its leads, who rise to the challenge splendidly. A Cancer Movie but not a horror story. Funny, moving, hopeful; an intimate portrait of a couple who know how to support each other and why that matters. Oh, and it's also a love letter to the NHS. Not very Christmassy, you might think, but it's not a 'cancer story' as has been said in some quarters, it's a love story, told profoundly and beautifully and honestly rather than cloyingly or sentimentally. Armed with an incandescent screenplay and unforgettable performances, Ordinary Love is affecting in its own quiet way, as it showcases a deeply moving portrait of a marriage tested under strain after a cancer diagnosis. Manville is particularly impressive here, delivering a transformative performance devoid of the showiness that lesser actors might milk for awards consideration. How refreshing to find a movie that actually views people in middle age as sexual beings. The unremarkable nature of this story becomes its strength, but the modest, well-acted virtues of the piece could have resonated profoundly with a little more detail. December 4, 2019 This cancer drama is earnest, gripping, well acted, sometimes harrowing. But simultaneously it's a TV play making honourable bids to escape into a bigger acoustic of style and theme. The sea wants to kiss the golden shore The sunlight warms your skin All the beauty that's been lost before Wants to find us again I can't fight you anymore It's you I'm fighting for The sea throws rock together But time leaves us polished stones We can't fall any further If we can't feel ordinary love We cannot reach any higher If we can't deal with ordinary love Birds fly high in the summer sky And rest on the breeze The same wind will take care of you and I will build our house in the trees Your heart is on my sleeve Did you put there with a magic marker For years I would believe That the world couldn't wash it away 'Cause we can't fall any further If we can't deal with ordinary love Are we tough enough For ordinary love We can't fall any further We can't fall any further If we can't deal with ordinary love.

This is almost a fly-on-the-wall style telling of how an ordinary couple discover and come to terms with one of them having cancer. It is told in an intimate but not sentimental way, and is really quite touching. Owen McCafferty's script uses humour, sex, pathos, occasional anger, and a relationship with another couple in a similar (though more terminal) situation to help convey the deep senses of frustration, helplessness and hope as they go through the testing and treatment procedures. Liam Neeson plays his part well; though the script doesn't give him too much to work with. Lesley Manville is superb, though - really very convincing; she elicits sympathy by the bucketful. It doesn't pull it's punches so be prepared for a tough watch at times. Every song a masterpiece 💯🤘🏼.

Sometimes keeping a film simple and not overdoing it with dramatic music or big set plays actually allows a film to resonate to a larger extent and that's certainly the case here. A reminder that Neeson is actually quite the versatile actor with the right material and a powerful lead alongside him. Emotional and a story that will likely effect most of us at sometime an intelligent, respectful yet all the powerful for it film that did not overstate or understate in any department but struck the perfect tone. Not necessarily for everyone but I for one thought it was fantastic.
